Protect your seed phrase, because it is your wallet

Whoever holds your twelve or twenty four words owns your coins. Here is how to store them safely, and which requests to turn down every time.

Protect your seed phrase, because it is your wallet

Setting up a self custody wallet gives you a list of words. Think of that list less as a password and more as the wallet itself. With those words, anyone can rebuild the wallet on any device and empty it.

How to store it

  • Write the words by hand on paper, in the correct order. If you hold larger amounts, a metal backup that can survive fire and water is worth considering.
  • Keep it off the internet entirely. That means no photos, no notes app, no cloud documents and no password manager that syncs across all your devices.
  • Store it somewhere you can still locate five years from now, and decide who should be able to find it if something happens to you.

Say no, every time

A genuine support team never needs your seed phrase. That covers wallet makers, exchanges and swap services alike. Scammers pretend to be every one of them, and a favourite move is a Telegram direct message right after you ask a question in a public group. The moment someone asks for your words, end the conversation.

Websites that want you to type in your phrase to validate, sync or claim something fall in the same bucket. It is theft, without exception.

What this means for swaps

A non custodial swap has no use for your keys. You paste a receiving address, which is public and fine to share, and you send from your own wallet. That is exactly the idea. If someone posing as our Telegram bot or our team asks for your phrase, it is not us. We never request it.

Quick answers

Does Swap1337 ever need my seed phrase?

Never. No swap requires it, no support ticket requires it, and no one at Swap1337 will ever ask you for it. Anyone who does is trying to take your coins.

Can I back up my seed phrase with a photo?

No. Photos sync to cloud accounts and can leak. The standard is paper or metal, stored offline.
