TRC20, ERC20 or BEP20: picking the right network for your USDT
One dollar, three separate chains. How fees and speed compare, plus the single mistake that can cost you your stablecoins for good.
Tether puts USDT on lots of blockchains. For you, it is simply a dollar. For the network, each version is its own token on its own chain. Choosing the wrong one is the number one way people lose stablecoins, so two minutes of reading pays off.
The three networks you will see most
- TRC20, on Tron. The busiest route for everyday transfers. Fees stay low and a confirmation takes roughly a minute. Addresses begin with T.
- ERC20, on Ethereum. The first version and the one accepted almost everywhere. Fees rise when Ethereum gets busy, which makes it a better fit for bigger amounts than for small ones. Addresses begin with 0x.
- BEP20, on BNB Chain. Cheap fees and quick blocks. Addresses begin with 0x as well, and they look exactly like Ethereum ones.
The one mistake to watch for
Ethereum and BNB Chain use the same address format. Whichever of the two you select, a wallet will gladly take a 0x address. Send BEP20 USDT to an address that only tracks Ethereum, and the coins land on a chain that wallet never checks. If it is your own wallet, you can often add the network and the coins appear again. If it is an exchange deposit address, you usually cannot.
So keep one rule in mind: pick the network first, on both ends, and check that they match.
How Swap1337 keeps you safe
We never list a stablecoin as just USDT. The network is always part of the name, for example USDT TRC20 or USDT BEP20. As soon as you paste a receiving address, we check that it matches the network you picked and warn you before the swap is created. Put a Tron address in an Ethereum field and it gets flagged right away.
So which should you choose
For small and medium amounts, TRC20 tends to be the cheapest, and exchanges and services accept it widely. If you are using DeFi on Ethereum, you need ERC20. If your wallet is on BNB Chain, BEP20 keeps your fees down. See how they compare on the USDT TRC20 overview, or swap directly from USDT into Monero.
Quick answers
Will TRC20 USDT arrive if I send it to an ERC20 address?
No, because these are two separate blockchains. Tron addresses begin with T and Ethereum addresses begin with 0x, so the format alone usually blocks the mistake. Still, always pick the network on both ends.
What happens if I send BEP20 USDT to an ERC20 address?
The two addresses look exactly alike, and that is the risk. Your coins arrive on BNB Chain at that same address. If the wallet behind it supports BNB Chain, you can get them back. With an exchange deposit address, that is often not possible.
